Beauty On A Budget: Skincare Savings-Exfoliators

Welcome back to the third Beauty on a Budget: Skincare Savings series! If you haven’t read my latest posts on skincare savings cleansers and toners, I encourage you to give them a read through.

The next product I’m going to focus on are exfoliators. Firstly, what is an exfoliator and why is it an important step in our skincare routine? An exfoliator is a product that is intended to remove the skins outermost surface. Exfoliants are an important step in our skincare because they break down the dry, dead skin cells to reveal the smooth, radiant texture underneath. Skipping the exfoliation process can lead to clogged pores, uneven texture, and uneven skin tone.

Types of Exfoliants

The two types of exfoliants (chemical and physical) work differently on the skins surface. Chemical exfoliators use acids to “peel” off that outermost layer of skin. Don’t worry, it’s not as painful as it sounds. Chemical exfoliators are less abrasive than physical exfoliators, but penetrate the skin deeper working great for acne scars.

Physical exfoliators manually scrub off the dead skin cells. With physical exfoliators, I recommend using a product that doesn’t have large exfoliating agents as large exfoliating agents are sharp and have jagged edges that can lead to micro-tears on your skin. Micro-tears are a free gateway for dirt, oil, and bacteria to enter through the skins surface, causing breakouts.

Facial Exfoliants Under $11

Let’s get into the money-saving exfoliants that will have your radiating from a mile away!

  1. Cetaphil Extra Gentle Daily Scrub, For all skin Types-$7.94

As this product mentions, it’s great for all skin types. Those with sensitive skin will greatly benefit from this product because of its non-drying and hypoallergenic formula. This gentle facial scrub has micro granules that safely remove dead and dry skin. It also has the added effect of sin conditioners to ensure that your skin stays well hydrated.

2. Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening & Exfoliating Face Scrub-$7.97

I love the Aveeno Positively Radiant line of products and the exfoliator is no exception. It is hands down one of the gentlest physical exfoliators I continue to use. Although it is gentle in exfoliation, it has a powerful impact by revealing more radiant, youthful skin underneath the outer layer. The formula is non-drying due to its moisture-rich soy extracts, so I highly recommend it for those with dry skin.

3. St. Ives Gentle Smoothing Face Scrub and Mask Oatmeal-$5.87

This exfoliator can also be left on your face to be used as a face mask. With its 100% natural exfoliant formula, you can be assured that this facial scrub offers maximum properties to your skin. Oatmeal is a natural anti-inflammatory as well as a moisture restorative. This can be used for all skin types, but is geared toward those with sensitive and/or dry skin.

4. St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Green Tea & Bamboo Face Scrub-$3.97

With this unbeatable price, how could you not love this facial scrub? The blackhead clearing exfoliant is ideally for those with oily skin. Not only does it work to rid your skin of uneven texture, but it contains 1% salicylic acid which is the key ingredient in acne fighting products. The green tea extract offers a calming after affect to restore balance into the skin. I personally use this exfoliator for the times when stubborn pimples appear.

5. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution-$8.70

Now this product was mentioned in my last post, Skincare Savings-Toners, and I just have to mention it again because its that amazing. Not only does it work as a toner, but a chemical exfoliant too! The glycolic acid works to break down dead skin layer bonds to reveal smoother skin underneath. As the layers are peeled away, acne scars begin to fade. Since it has 7% glycolic acid, I would not recommend this to those of you with sensitive skin.

6. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA-$6.70

Like the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, The Ordinary has created the sister product, featuring lactic acid. Lactic acid is used as a chemical exfoliator as its main purpose is to brighten, smooth, and even skin tone. This is one of my go to weekly chemical exfoliators. I personally don’t use it more than twice a week due to its acidic nature. If you find it to be too strong for you skin, you can use it with a toner to dilute the potency. I can assure you; you will have glowing radiant skin after using it for a month!

7. e.l.f. Cosmetics Gentle Peeling Exfoliant-$10.00

Just like in the name, gentle is the best way to describe this product. This is a $10 miracle worker that is different from the other exfoliators as it gives skin a pilling effect, so you actually see the dead skin coming off! I know, kind of gross, but so satisfying. This water based exfoliant also has the key ingredient of glycerin, which gives moisture and suppleness to the skin. You will immediately feel how smooth your skin as after using this miracle worker.

8. Tree Hut Sugarlips Lip Scrub-$4.99

So, I’ve recommended facial exfoliant, but we can’t forget the lips either. Our lips build up with dead skins and lip product residue too! Lips scrubs will make your lipstick or lip balm application flawless. One of my all-time favourite lip scrubs is the ones by tree hut. Not only does it take off all the dead skin instantly but it leaves your lips feeling smooth and moisturized. I like to use this just before going to bed and trust me, a little goes a long way. The smell is a heavenly bonus too.

Beauty Tip: Exfoliation is not recommended to be done more than three times per week. Over exfoliating can cause skin irritation, encourage breakouts if done too roughly and slows the process of skin cell regeneration. Keep your skin shining ladies!

If you have struggle with textured skin or acne scaring, I highly recommend using one of these chemical or physical exfoliants to reveal the beautiful glow you have underneath that top layer. You will notice how much smoother your makeup application is too. These affordable exfoliators will have your skin thanking you. Thanks for reading another Beauty on a Budget post!
