Skincare has always been a trial-and-error process with me since my teenage years. I went through so many products, so many different regimens, and made terrible mistakes with my skin. Now that I’m in my twenties, I feel like I’ve finally found a skincare routine that works for me. I want to share with you my 5 skincare mistakes I wish I avoided so that you don’t make the same mistakes as I did.
Cleansing With Hot Water
Let’s just get this one out of the way. Why would I think it was a good idea to cleanse my face with hot water?? I guess I thought the hot water would help break up the oil and dirt, but I clearly wasn’t thinking about the damage it was doing to my skin. Cleansing with hot water is probably the easiest way to dry out your skin because it strips your skin of the natural oils. Even though I’m an oily skin girl, my face would feel super dry after cleansing with hot water! We all know dryness leads to premature aging, which is not cute. Instead of using hot water, I now use tepid water and can see such a difference in the moisture of my skin.
Using Makeup Remover Wipes
A few years ago, it seemed like everyone was wiping their makeup off with makeup remover wipes. I always knew the importance of taking of my makeup before going to bed, but I didn’t know the correct method. Not only are makeup wipes a huge waste of money and harmful to the environment, but they can lead to premature aging as well. All the pulling and tugging on your face, especially around the eyes, is just an open invitation for wrinkles! Now I use cleansing balms/oils to take off my makeup, and they’re WAY more effective in getting all the stubborn makeup off. I talk about one of my go-to cleansing balms in a previous post here. I love cleansing balms/oils because they’re gentle on the skin, add moisture, and take off all my makeup in one use.
Layering Skincare Products Incorrectly
Some people may not think it’s a big deal to layer your skincare products in a specific order. I was completely guilty of this. I used to think, “they’re all going on my face anyway, right?” Wrong wrong wrong! The order most definitely matters because certain products won’t work as effectively if they’re layered after or before another product. For instance, you always want to apply a product with hyaluronic acid on damp skin because the bonds in hyaluronic acid love water/water-based products. I was surprised how much easier it absorbed into my skin.
Not Giving Products Enough Time To Work
Patience is a virtue that I’m working on when it comes to skincare. A lot of the time I would use a highly recommended product for a couple weeks and give up on it because I wasn’t seeing immediate results. I know, so silly! But I had the mindset that skincare products should work right away. But the reality is, nothing is instant. So I had to learn to be patient. Now what I do is give myself a 3-month trial with each new skincare product I try. I can tell you; I’ve seen a difference in my skin. I cannot stress enough how important it is to give your products time to work!
Not Wearing Sunscreen Daily
Being a Caribbean person, I was never taught the importance of sunscreen. Furthermore, living in Canada where the winters are so long, I just didn’t see the point to wearing sunscreen. I always believed it was for those with fair skin, to avoid getting sunburnt. I can honestly kick myself now for such ignorant thinking. Sunscreen is for everyone and should be used every day despite the climate. I’ve always suffered from hyperpigmentation, but not wearing sunscreen on my face made my hyperpigmentation even worse. I cannot live without sunscreen now because of how much it’s helped fade my hyperpigmentation. If you don’t do anything else in your skincare routine, wear sunscreen and protect your delicate skin.
